Signs of Alternator Trouble that Mean You Should Visit Our Airway Heights Auto Shop

Inland Sales & Service • 22 March 2022

A faulty alternator can cause your battery to become drained to the point that your engine won’t fire up. This makes it important to get to the shop when you first notice a sign of an alternator problem. At Inland Sales & Service, our local mechanics are highly experienced with alternator and auto electric repair in the greater Spokane area.

Common Indications of Alternator Failure

In many cases, the first sign of alternator trouble is an illuminated warning light that reads ALT or GEN or turns on in the form of a little glowing battery. Anytime a warning light comes on, it’s important to quickly figure out what exactly is triggering it. This way, the problem can hopefully be addressed before it escalates and causes major problems.

Another symptom of alternator failure is that your car’s electrical accessories aren’t working properly. Power seats may adjust slower than usual and power windows may take longer to go up and down. Today’s vehicles regularly have computers that can determine which electrical accessories should be powered down when the alternator isn’t functioning correctly. This conserves power for the car’s most pressing electrical needs, such as for keeping headlight on. That said, flickering/dimming headlights are another potential indication of a faulty alternator.

A dead battery is another possible sign of alternator failure. However, a dead battery doesn’t automatically mean that the alternator isn’t doing its job. There are various other reasons why batteries die, including loose/corroded connections, leaving on headlights, parasitic draws, and old age. But if there isn’t another clear-cut culprit for your dead battery, then it’s worth checking to see if your alternator is to blame.
