Inland Sales & Service • 7 February 2022

Some drivers worry that an illuminated check engine light means that their engine is on the cusp of collapse. But this isn't necessarily the case. In many instances, the problem triggering the check engine light can be easily and affordably addressed. The important thing is that you're proactive about getting to the shop for diagnostics. This way, you'll hopefully be able to nip the problem in the bud before it escalates and becomes much more expensive to fix. At Inland Sales & Service, our local mechanics use advanced computerized diagnostics to accurately pinpoint issues that trigger the check engine light.

What is triggering my check engine light?

Catalytic converter trouble is often to blame when a check engine light turns on. Symptoms of a catalytic converter issue include worsening acceleration, a sulphurous smell, and decreasing fuel-efficiency. For your car to remain minimally polluting, it's important that the catalytic converter stays in healthy shape. With a faulty O2 sensor, your check engine light may illuminate and catalytic converter trouble might develop. Your mass airflow sensor is another sensor that can cause the light to turn on when there's trouble with it. If you have a mass airflow sensor problem, your engine might stall out shortly after you start it.

Bad spark plugs are another issue that can cause the light to come on. Vehicles made in the last two decades can typically go 100,000 miles before they need their plugs replaced, while older automobiles tend to need new plugs more often. When the check engine light turns on, there's also a chance you're dealing with failing ignition coils. Indications of ignition coil trouble include stalling, failure to start, and worsening MPGs. A faulty battery can also trigger the light if it's causing low voltage at the computer. And if you're lucky, all that is triggering your check engine light is a loose gas cap. It's important to fully tighten your gas cap after each time you fill up so that fuel doesn't evaporate before your engine gets the opportunity to run on it.
